The main goal of any web site should be to get attention and get as many people as you can to visit your web site. Be it selling a product or service or conveying an opinion or information you want to get attention and this means getting traffic. You should devote your energies to getting the search engines to direct as many visitors as possible to your web pages. The most economical and focused traffic is delivered by the search engines.

Search engines stay in business by understanding what the user are searching for and delivering relevant results. The number one goal of every search engine is to attract users and increase loyalty and this can only be done by delivering what the searchers are looking for in a relevant and timely fashion. The more often the searchers return the greater the search engines fortunes. The objectives for you and your web pages is precisely the same as the search engines.Acquire users and keep them coming back.

So what is it you need to do?. There are two methods that you can use. You can work hard to produce very good content and publish it on your web pages or you can advertise using methods such as Pay Per Click or Google Adwords.

From a search engines perspective there are only keywords and key phrases without these content on the Internet simply doesn’t exist. Keywords tell the search engines what the user is looking for. The search engine goes and looks in its vast index of web pages and selects the most relevant web pages and then returns them in a list that is ordered in terms of relevance and authority. The search engines decision about what pages to display in the results are based upon two key factors relevance and authority.

Relevance means the page contains the keywords and authority means the page has back links to it from other web pages. The search engines determine the order in which web pages are indexed on the results pages by the number of back links to the page and their respective authority.

Back links are the most important factor in optimising your pages for the search engines.

Back links play two important roles they direct traffic to your web site and factor in the search engines deciding the position of your web pages in the index of results. Users finding web pages with back links to your web page will click on your back links and visit your site if the keyword text in your back link is relevant to what they are searching for. This text in the back link is known as ‘anchor text’ and this too is taken into consideration by the search engines. Back links can vary in value.

Back links from web pages that contain content related to your web page have an impact on the authority of your web page.Web pages with more authority pass more authority onto your pages .
